Teaser Trailers
I started to research different teaser trailers to get a better understanding of the codes and conventions needed in a successful teaser trailers. I researched both amateur and professional teaser trailer to help me get some inspiration for my own teaser trailer and help decide a genre by also looking at different genres such as action, horror and romance.

This teaser trailer is for the movie 'Mind Games', made by students at Lampton School. It is clear to see that this movie is the hybrid, psychological thriller. The elements of the trailer which links it to the psychological genre is firstly the information you are given about the female character who you find out is a lawyer and she has been "Left with no memory". from this statement it can be assumed by the audience that the premise of the story evolves around her memory loss. There is a repetition of the girls eyes opening and "the tattoo" being repeated in the trailer. These particular clips have been distorted to figuratively allow the audience to empathise with the confusion that the character is feeling. This allows them to engage with what they are watching, creating an interest in the movie.
What I like about this trailer was the editing of the cross cutting between the eyes and the paper with 3 symbols on it which I assume is the "tattoo", between various shots. It highlighted the bewildered state of the situation, creating a tense atmosphere. However one thing which i disliked about the trailer was was the last shot of the man slowly passing by looking directly at the camera. This shot was not powerful in comparison to the strong background music which made this shot seem weak as it did not strike you in any way. |

This teaser trailer is for the movie 'Black Water Bay', made by students at Lampton School. It is evident to see that this movie is of the genre thriller and possibly is the hybrid of action thriller. What really entices me about this trailer is the fast cross cutting between various shots in contrast to the slow, nursery rhyme playing in the background. There is so much action happening in these shots of violence, murder, chase scenes and there is suspense and tension being created from the nursery rhyme playing in the background which just makes the trailer come across as all the more scarier. By putting these shots with this music, the audience will be drawn into wanting to know what will happen to the man who wants revenge, they will have questions about all of the crazy action that they are watching and the only way to answer those questions is to watch the movie.
There is on the other hand one thing that I really dislike about the trailer which is some scenes being shot in pure daylight where there are people strolling around. This makes everything seem so unrealistic and ruins the vibe that the trailer intends to create for their audience. I also think that nearer to the end of the trailer, there should have been a quiet but deep constant noise to conclude the trailer or even silence, this would have increased the intensity of suspense and tension being built in the trailer. |

Overall there were too many genres involved into this teaser trailer making it difficult to understand the actual story line and identify the genre of the film. For example there was a scientist giving the idea of sci-fi then a almost crime thriller scene at the end. Which is confusing as it looks as if there have been a bunch of scenes put together. It was also difficult to interpret why the gas mask was used. There was allot of information given to the audience making the trailer confusing . They were however a variety of shots which made it seem like a teaser trailer and the soundtrack helped to add to the tension of the trailer making it fast pace.

Aimee overall was a very good example of a teaser trailer. As it was very simplistic and focused closely on a specific character such as the clown. The genre horror is clear to identify and there aren't too many genres and story lines mixed into one. The music of the trailer is very constant and effective with the trailer. There were a variety of different shots and the editing made it seem more like a trailer as it was fast pace. However the trailer begins with a shot of the church which from the very beginning you are not able to tell which genre it is portraying however as it develops you can clearly see its a horror with the dark eerie mise en scene and many other factors such as clothing, make-up and sound. Even though the trailer didn't consist of dialogue the mise en scene of the trailer made it very effective as the trailer took place in was location it still engaged the audience and made them ask questions making you want to watch the movie.

Mise-en-scene:
The beginning of the trailer is set in a bedroom which is messy full of toddler's toys all over the room. The room contains numerous pieces of antique wooden furniture like the bed and the dark wood rocking chair. `the look of the room does resemble the stereotypical image given for an elderly person's room but taking into consideration that there are toys everywhere, the audience will not be given the wrong message that this is the case. The trailer then follows onto showing china dolls and wooden monkeys that are playing instruments. These toys do not resemble the sort you'd find in this era therefore this allows the audience to make the assumption of the time that this movie is set in which is the 18th/19th century; this assumption can be considered certain when we see a long shot of a horse riding along marsh. One of the monkey toys begin to play the instrument it is holding and follows on to the other monkeys doing the same. No characters have been introduced so the setting of the trailer at this moment comes across as being deserted by people. This brings across to the audience, the supernatural element, giving them a hint of what genre the movie is, considering supernatural movies are highly popular, those who are intrigued by the genre will be grasped by what they are watching and will take an interest in the rest of the trailer. Bringing across an aspect of the genre right at the beginning of the movie is a great technique to build up an audience by catching the attention of an audience that the genre already holds. The house begins to become the main focus of the trailer as continuous shots of it are shown from the inside and out. The voiceover assures the audience that it is just one house that we are seeing. A gradual story is being created, as the audience can link the supernatural to this grand isolated house that is mysterious and ghostly looking. A brief structure of the narrative is being created with the use of the mise-en-scene. Sound: The trailer begins with the sound of wind blowing which comes across as non-diegetic to the audience. Another non-diegetic sound comes in when we begin to see he monkey toys play. The tune which the toys play resembles the stereo-typical sound of a nursery rhyme. The effect in which this has on the trailer is that it creates a very tense and eery atmosphere for the audience as it plays along it what you see on screen. This engages the audience to acknowledge what they are watching and be interested to see the trailer to know what the movie is about which will then lead on to them to want to watch the movie. I think that the selling point for this trailer is within the dialogue when the voice of the little girl states who she is describing which is "the woman in black". This is the woman that is not named but still is an eponymous character as she is famously known in the story as "The Woman in Black". This tells the audience that her character overshadows the actions and story for the other characters. 'The Woman in Black' is a famous novel therefore this movie is ought to have an audience who have read the novel and are interested in seeing the movie's adaptation of it. |
|
Mise-en-scene:
The setting of the beginning of the trailer is on a beach by the camp-fire under the stars of the night. around the camp-fire are a group of friends, two boys and girls who seems to look like couples. This image being created makes it look as if this is going to be a teen romance movie as the characters on screen look quite young. it is as if the fire represents safety in the scene as after this, when they are driving one of the friends knock someone down because of dangerous driving. One other prime setting n the trailer is the lake where we see the dead body of their victim, thrown. This lake is repeatedly shown through out the trailer as it is of a great importance as it is where their secret now hides. As a member of the audience, you are reminded in the trailer that their story after the lake scene is determined by everything they had done. A key prop in the trailer is the note which we see one of the female receive stating "I know what you did last summer". This first note is very key as it is sort of like an eponymous character considering it is the name of the movie. When seeing what is written on the note, the audience are informed that the movie is going to be based on someone knowing the secret which the friends hold. Sending notes such as these is a connotation of blackmail therefore we also know that the group of friends are being black mailed for killing someone. Camera: The use of high angle and low angle shots being put in the trailer is that it puts each character in their place grouping them into who are the victims and who are the villains in the movie, who is strong and who is weak and who is safe and who is in danger. For instance there are various low angle shots of the hooded figure who is attacking the friends, being used in the clip. In these shots, you see either one of the friends being harmed by the hooded man/woman, such as when you see one of the female friends being pushed out of the window. An example of a high angle being used is when one of the male friends are in hospital as we see an unknown figure trying to run them down with a car. This victimises the character as he is shown to be weaker and vulnerable to the situation he is in which is caused by the person black mailing him. However knowing he is part of the secret death that occurred "last summer", it is ironic for him to be in the place of the victim. This element of irony with characterisation entices the audience, grabbing their interest into the movie being promoted in this trailer. |
|
Mise-en-scene:
The beginning of the trailer shows a scene set in a sorority house which it is assumed to be as there are sorority logo and names continuously shown, In this scene you can see people dancing, drinking and partying. This automatically tells the audience that this movie is ought to be a teen fiction, therefore the target audience will be for young adults. The colour of these shots are vibrant and bright and are in the daytime showing that the atmosphere is lively and ecstatic. Th trailer then cross cuts to a bedroom scene where you meet 5 girls, it can be guessed that the movie is based around these six girls. The lighting in this shot is much dimmer than the previous ones however the colour is orange which symbolises safety. The girls are seen conversing and sniggering whilst watching someone on their laptop. This already creates characterisation as it makes the girls appear as cunning, which is stereotypical for a teenage girl to be presented as. The setting instantly shifts to a dingy building site at night where they carry on playing a prank on someone. The atmosphere instantly changes as the mood becomes more sinister due to the spine-chilling feeling of the isolated building site. A prop that is very significant in this trailer is the tire iron Garrett used to kill one of the friends, as it is repeatedly shown through out the trailer. This prop is very key as it is shows to appear a year after the death in a message to blackmail the girls. This helps the audience identify that the movie is based on the whole murder that took place, as it has come back to haunt the friends of the girl who has died. On the building site, a shot of the 5 friends is seen only outlining their silhouette, almost looking like a shadow. This shot is really effective as it outlines the whole event which we have seen so far in the trailer and a key element of the plot which is secrecy. We can't see the girls, they are unidentifiable, just like the murder they have covered up, it is their darkest secret which remains hidden. Secrecy is a key connotation to gossip, which is highly associated with girls, particularly teenage girls/young female adults. Therefore it can be said that this trailer has been created to attract and engage it's target audience. Sound: In the beginning of the trailer, close ups are used when a meeting with sorority girls is taking place. By using the close ups which focused on 6 girls, as an audience member you can identify that these girls are the main cast of the movie. Later on in the trailer, close ups are used to show the terror and shock on the face of the 5 girls as they are being blackmailed and attacked. This builds up a lot of tension giving the audience an insight into what an impact the movie will have on them which is important as this usually helps someone determine whether or not they'd want to see the movie. Various mid shots of scenes are shown through out the movie trailer. In these shots are usually the all or some of the 5 girls of the group of friends. By focusing a lot on the 5 girls in the trailer allows the audience to capture the key elements which are being given across, so they understand what this movie is about. |

Man Of Steel Review - This is the trailer for 'Man of Steel', a superhero film which is based on the DC comics character, Superman. The trailer begins with a close up of a wave washing over a rock, clothes waving in the wind of the day and a seagull flying in the air by the sea. It then moves on stating "Next Year" is when the movie will be released, teasing the audience by giving vague details. The audience should assume from this detail that they will not be getting a full insight into what the movie will be about. After this, you see a man getting on with his work on the boat but has a puzzled look on his face as if he is lost. These shots then cut to the Director of the movie being stated who is Zack Snyder and mentions previous movies he has directed which was 'Watchmen' and '300'. Both movies mentioned are blockbusters which are both action packed and has elements of the fantasy genre in them. By stating movies previously directed by Zack Snyder, the distributors are reassuring the audience that if they liked the movies mentioned, then they will definitely like this one; they are selling the movie before showing hat it actually is, engaging the audience into their trailer. You then see a little boy wearing a cape, impersonating a superhero, over this is a voice over by Russel Crowe, talking about someones fate, indirectly talking about the little boy, who you then figure out is Clark Kent aka Superman. The trailer then moves onto a blank screen where we see the movie title fading in. There is then a birds eye shot of superman flying up into the sky. This shot clarifies to the audience that this movie is about DC's hero, Superman and follows on by showing a glimpse of the logo. These last to attributes create a lot of excitement for the audience as they are appealed to the site of a classic superhero which is widely admired. The shot of "Superman" flying into the sky is the unique selling point because you get a taste of seeing the superhero in action which is what Superman is most adored for.
I like this teaser trailer because it builds up a lot of excitement for a movie based on the legendary Superman by using simple shots and slow, but dramatic music. The music aggravate the heroic element of the trailer to come across to the audience. Not too much detail is given away which is a great way to build publicity for the movie, by making the audience want to go out and find out more. |

The Dark Knight Rises Review - This is the teaser trailer for the movie 'The Dark Knight Rises'. This movie is an epic superhero film that features the DC comics character Batman. A significant way in which the trailer authorizes that this movie is a Superhero movie is the statement we see at the beginning saying "Every hero has a journey". This lays out the genre of the story for the audience and will get them speculating as to which superhero this movie could be about. Over this, is slow, tense music that is gradually getting higher and faster, stressing on the suspense that is increasing for the audience. After a shots of a weak man limping comes another statement which says "Every journey has an end". This statement hints that this is the end of a sequel, it is the end of a "journey" that the audience of 'The Dark Knight' has gone on along with the characters of the movie. Shots where bats are flying about is shown giving away such a key connotation of the movie, making it obvious as to which movie this is. But all suspense is broken when we see a familiar character of 'The Dark Night' James Gordon played by Gary Oldman, laying in a hospital bed and quotes "the Batman must come back". If you have seen the first of the two movies, you'd recognise Gary Oldman in his character and should instantly be able to identify with what movie this is. This shows that this trailer is targeted at the audience that 'The Dark Night' series as this trailer presses on the fact that this is the grand conclusion of a hole adventure that 'The Dark Night' has taken their audience on.
The reason as to why I like this trailer is because it creates a lot of eye catching drama, which begins the end of a journey. So many key elements are shown in the beginning of the trailer which fans of 'The Dark Night' series would be able to recognise straight away and for those who have never watched any of the series, you are shown glimpses of the previous movie and the intensity of the dramatic features of the quotes, to the music being presented in the trailer, is really encouraging to make people want to watch the previous movies to know what 'The Dark Night' is all about. |
Genre Analysis
Action
Action film is a genre where in physical action takes priority in the storytelling. Action films consist of the typical codes and conventions such as big budget, car chases, cat and mouse chase, explosions-crashes, mass destruction and many more. The story line 99% of the time will have a male dominant hero that has a goal but is facing many obstacles to achieve it. Action films generally use CGI to make action sequences and destructive disaster look very realistic. It has many sub genres such as action comedy which consist the hero to bring out the humour in the action as they tend to be less intense and an example of this is Rush Hour. Also another sub genre is action-war which includes the traditional factors of an action film but revolves around war, exploring the more serious aspects of war and an example of this is Platoon. 'A good day to die hard' uses the typical conventions of an action film without revealing to much of the story line. The teaser trailer from the very beginning use a high angle shot to reveal a army base setting the scene for the audience which suggest danger ahead. The editing of the teaser trailers shows the fast jumps cuts of different shots to foreshadow of the action ahead. We then see a a shot of Hollywood actor Bruce Willis the main character who has starred in the previous 'Die Hard' films to give the audience a sense of reassurance and comfort almost that the 'Die Hard' legend is back with another epic film and the audience are not going to be let down. As 'Die Hard' has become an infamous franchise it relies on audience to like the previous instalments in able to watch the trailer for the fifth film. It gives a chance for escapism for the audience. As the trailer is filled with action packed scenes such as car explosions, women dressed provocatively and expensive weaponry. It uses a dramatic sound track to emphasis the action and add to the exhilaration of the film. The titles of the film are in red to suggest the release date of the film as this is effective as the big bold lettering will anchor itself into the audiences minds. |
|
Sci-Fi
Science fiction provides a way of escapism for the audience. They merge a science plot theme into the film. As they incorporate a hero, aliens and generally futuristic elements. They are usually set in the future or in space. Star Trek into darkness is the sequel of star trek. The trailer is very effective as it first begins with an establishing shot of the futuristic world they live in as its unfamiliar to the audience. Giving an insight of the film from the very few seconds of the trailer as it fits perfectly into the sci-fi genre. The editing for the very beginning is significant as it uses dissolves which slowly move from one shot to another revealing more of the setting. Then suddenly the scene jumps from a fast pace action scene with dramatic music. This is to show that there is action and drama ahead. It builds up tension and suspension in the trailer making the audience more interested as the use of vibrant colours in a futuristic world is unusual and appealing to the eye. There are many explosions to also emphasise the action in the film. The teaser trailer includes the famous characters such as Captain Kirk. The film has many futuristic buildings and gadgets also implementing its a high budget film. The title of the trailer is very effective as its bright lettering contrasting the darkness, also it slowly reappears from the dark background which links to the title "into darkness". The audience of this film would be people who are a big fan of the star trek films and young adults who are intrested the sci-fi genre. There is also a shot of the famous Hollywood directors name 'J.J Abrams' who is best known for his work in action and sci fi based films. Which also appeals to an audience who prefer those types of films. |

Horror
Horror is a genre that typically creates a sense of fear in almost every scene. The mise en scene is generally dark and errie and relies, using allot of unsettling scenes and screaming to help emphasise the horror and fear inflicted on the actor. There are many sub genres to horror such as comedy horror, zombie horror, teen horror, monster horror and many more. Horror film can also overlap into the sci-fi genre, fantasy and thriller genre. Then the pace of the shot suddenly changes as the tension is building up as the fmaily are in danger the pace begins to get faster. The soundtrack of the trailer is alarm sounds which is significant as it portrays warning. There are many establishing shots to show the contrast of day and night. Also to show the danger happenig in the dark. Also there are many shots of the CCTV showing volience which is very effective as it makes the trailer seem more realistic and show what is actually happening. The film appeals to young adults as its rated a 15 thus allowing to show more horror. |

Biopics
The biopic genre dramatise the life of a historical person or people. Biopics are generally different from films that are based on true stories, as biopics tend to base the story line film around that particular person or even a very important period of their life. An auto-biopic movie however is where the main character in the movie is played by the actual person. There are many different biopic films that have had huge success such as The Iron Lady based on the life of Margaret Thatcher. Yves Saint Laurent is however a biopic based around a the famous French designer and his career in 1958. The beginning of the teaser trailer starts of with a medium shot of a man, however we do not see his face automatically making the audience intrigued to know who it is. As the trailer proceeds there are many opening titles which are common in biopic trailers as they also help to tell the story without there being any dialogue. It engages the audience as they get to read along and become more involved. The music at the beginning is very slow and dramatic however when the action picks up we hear a more fast upbeat music, and the music generally changes with the action and drama being shown. Throughout the trailer there a continuous jump cuts which shows the progression of the famous French designers life over time. However the trailer doesn't give too much of the designers life away leaving the audience wanting more. The only part of dialogue we hear throughout the trailer is "Yves Saint Laurent" which is very significant as its emphasises on the title making it more magnificent with the title glistening against the black background. Biopics are generally have a restricted audience as they are aimed at a certain audience. |
|
Romance
The romance genre is based around the love between two protagonists. The genre usually explores and goes into depth with an issue within love such as love triangles, sacrificial love and forbidden love. The Notebook is an epic love story based around a young couple who fall in love in the 1940s, however their story is narrated at present day by an elderly man. The voice over is very effective as you hear a males deep but heart warming voice telling the brief story to the audience. There are also many establishing shots of the beautiful countryside to add to the romance genre. There are many cross cuts and dissolves during the trailer between the old couple and young couple which is very effective as the trailer flows much more. The romance genre is targeted mainly at young women and couples. The aim of a romance film is to bring out strong emotions within the audience. |

Our Chosen Genre
At the beginning of this project my group and I decided we wanted to base our teaser trailer around a horror genre. However after a few weeks of filming for our trailer we weren't happy with the outcome and decided it would be a better idea to change our story line and genre completely. We wanted to do something that hadn't been done before and was a challenge for us A-level students. Therefore we decided to chose the sports biopic genre and base our film around basketball.
Sports Biopic & Sub-Genres
A sports film is usually centred around a sporting event or athlete. There plot is very simple and almost predictable, as the story line will build up to one significant event. Sports films have a large number of sub genres.
Sports Biopic - A sports biopic dramatises the life of a professional athlete or an important sports team. Within a sports biopic they tend to exaggerate the truth for dramatic effect which is sometimes questioned as the accuracy of the film may not be all true. Sports biopics put emphasis on a large sports events that the subject has played and portrays the fame that accompanies that sport. Examples: Ali, Raging Bull, Coach Carter.
Sports Comedy - A sports comedy includes comedy into the sports genre which rely on slapstick humour. Generally sports comedies tend to use a destitute hero on his way to prove worthiness through some kind of sporting event. Examples: Blades of Glory, White Men Cant Jump, The Comebacks.
Sports Drama - A sports drama also incorporates dramatics elements into the film. It looks more into depth of the harsh aspects of the sporting world, things people don't see behind closed doors. Due to the more dramatic elements it tends to appeal to the more older audience. Examples: Seabiscuit, Cinderella Man, Rocky.
Sports Family - A sports family sub-genre is a sports movie that is intended for all age groups. Often having a simple storyline and an inspirational and uplifting ending. Sports movies generally will have a moral lesson which is portrayed throughout the whole movie. Examples: The Karate Kid, Angels in the Outfield, The Mighty Ducks.

Ali - The trailer first starts of with a close up of Will smiths face followed by a medium shot which is shown to establish what the trailer is going to be about as the audiences sees a boxing ring. The movie trailer is set in around the 60s as you can establish this by the costume and mise en scene. The trailer first starts of fast paced with an excited mood however when Will Smith who plays Muhammed Ali gets knocked of his feet and falls to the floor the music suddenly stops. The only sound we hear is dialogue. This is effective as it adds to the tension and drama as Ali got knocked to the floor it represents and foreshadows bad things to come later on in the movie. Within the trailer there are many fast pace cross cuts which help to show key parts of the movie in a short space of time and also the struggles Ali went through to become a boxer, which evokes sympathy in the audience. There is suddenly a black out and an uplifting speech by Will Smith which leads onto the music getting faster with the sound of drums. This sound is quite aggressive and shows that Will Smith is ready again to fight for his dream. Ali famous quote is used 'float like a butterfly sting like a bee' which evokes excitement in the audience as now the audience no there is more action to come. The fighting scene is fast pace which emphasises the action. There is allot of drama shown in the trailer as we also see a love interest which may appeal to also a female audience. There are titles shown which are very simplistic but effective as there is allot going on in the trailer its appeasing to the eye as it can be remembered easily with the lights flashing, which link with the previous shots. There is allot of dialogue used by Will Smith which helps almost describe what is happening. The title of the film is shown in bold red letters against a black background which is significant as the whole movie is about Muhammed Ali. The target audience of this film however is very limited however as its a drama it may be liked by many different people.

Love and Basketball - The beginning of the trailer starts off with a group of young children in what it looks to be, a back yard, playing basketball. We are already introduced to the sport. We then see confrontation between mainly a boy and a girl who play one on one and from this we cant tell that this movie is ought to be based on the sport, basketball as from the dialogue they talk about the future and playing for NBA. Also from the bickering between the two characters, you can sense that there will be some romantic element that will arise between who it seems to be, the central characters of this movie. After this shot, the trailer transitions to showing the older versions of the male and female character. A recurring prop that can be identified as very significant for the trailer, is the basketball and also a court. We see numerous crosscuts between shots where the male and female central characters are playing basketball and training. We see a small conversation in the car between the older two characters and we can identify it is the same characters we met at the beginning as they still share a witty relationship with one another. Through dialogue, and the props, you start to gain an idea of what the character's stories are but you are not told too much. We then see the characters at a school dance and this is where the elements of drama start to come across to the audience. From the transition we see of the female character's clothes to the reaction of the male character's to it, it is clear that the two will form a relationship. After we see the flourishing of the love between the two, we see the character's go back to their focus of their dream. With the use of a voice over, playing over various cross cuts of training hard and playing during intense moments in games, the audience can depict what the hiccup for the characters will be which is their dreams becoming between one another. The importance of their dream is written out for us when listening to the voice over and this has a great impact on the audience, wanting to know which path they will choose, will it be their love for each other or for basketball? The dialogue plays a huge part in this trailer, telling a brief outline of what the story is which is significant to inform your audience about in order to engage the audience you're targeting your product at.
