1) In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
- How does your teaser trailer link to its genre?
The genre of our teaser trailer is a sports biopic which is a sub genre of a drama so the most significant element of our trailer was to have a central sport that will be incorporated to our characters story. Our chosen sport was basketball which means that our conventions and props were very significant when distinguishing the genre of our trailer. For example our main prop was a basketball which it numerously shown throughout the trailer and we also made sure that our location matched what we were trying to achieve which linked to our story line as we didn’t want to give the audience the wrong idea of where the characters story is going for example where the character is in his live.
- What was your inspiration?
THE INSPIRATION BEHIND OUR MEDIA PRODUCTS DERIVED FROM PREVIOUS MADE SPORT BIOPICS SUCH AS MICHAEL MANN’S ‘ALI’. THE FILM IS ABLE TO MOVE THE CROWD WITH IT’S OVER WHELMING STORY OF THE CENTRAL CHARACTER BUT AT THE SAME TIME, HAS THE ABILITY TO MAKE THE AUDIENCE FEEL THE SUBLIME AS THEY GET LOST IN THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE SCENES THAT THEY ENCOUNTER THROUGH OUT THE MOVIE. IN OUR TRAILER MORE SPECIFICALLY, IT WAS THE FEELING OF AWE THAT WE WANTED TO PORTRAY TO OUR AUDIENCE THROUGH OUR CENTRAL CHARACTER, IN ORDER TO MAKE THE AUDIENCE FAVOUR THEM SO THAT THEY ARE ENGAGED AND INTERESTED IN OUR MOVIE. IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS POSSIBLE, WE HAD TO GRASP ONTO THE DRAMATIC FEATURES OF OUR CHARACTER’S STORY, REALLY SHOWING A CLEAR SEGREGATION BETWEEN THE HIGH POINTS IN THEIR LIFE AND THE LOW POINTS. AS OUR AUDIENCE WOULD BE TEENAGERS/YOUNG ADULTS AS WELL AS THOSE INTERESTED IN BASKETBALL, WE WANTED TO INSPIRE THEM WHICH IS WHY WE SHOWED HOW THE LOW POINTS WERE THE DRIVE TO WORK HARDER AND PERSEVERE TO BE BETTER. BY DOING THIS, WE MADE THE CHARACTER DISPLAY AN EMOTION THAT WAS ON GOING IN THE MOVIE WHICH IS A COMMON FEATURE FOUND IN MOVIES THAT ARE BASED ON SPORT.
- How did you put your own mark on a sports biopic?
Most sports movies set in the UK have a narritive that is based on sports such as football and cricket as there is more of a buzz in the UK about these sports. On the other hand sports such as basketball and baseball are popular in the US so the challenge we wanted to take on here was to incorporate basketball into narrative that was set in the UK. We were aware that the sport is popular among teenagers/young adults specifically of the male gender so we had an idea of how we wanted to combine our central characters story with basketball.
- Were there any other unique aspects in your trailer?
We incoporated our own film festival which is London youth film festival, into our trailer. The reason behind making our own film ffestival was that we felt our trailer didn’t fit well with movies you find in organisations such as cannes. So we wanted to associate our trailer with a film festival that spoke to the younger generation.

2)HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?
After researching, analysing and annotating magazine covers such as Empire and Slam Magazine I discovered that our main character had to centralise the cover so that the audience could make a link between the magazine cover and trailer In similarity with the poster. We tried to make our poster, magazine cover and trailer all link through the use of props, costume, fonts and main characters. These different elements were shown through out three different ancillary texts. Our film was based on the sport basketball and therefore we wanted to use to most obvious prop in both out magazine cover and poster which was the basketball. This prop was the most vital as it helped to distinguish the genre of our trailer. With both the magazine cover and poster we had made the basketball the main focus of the poster. With the characters in our magazine cover we wanted to also make them the main focus. However in the poster we had wanted our main character Yahya to be the central image as his character is more prominent in our trailer than our younger actor. Although we decided to place our younger actor Ahmed in the middle ground as he was still significant. We thought it would be a good idea to have Ahmed almost faded in the middle ground looking into the future. As Ahmed is portrayed as Yahyas past and we wanted this to be very clear in both our trailer and magazine. Our magazine cover also feature both our actors however Ahmed was positioned behind our main character to show that Yahya is more dominant in our trailer and 2 ancillary texts. When deciding the costumes for our actors we wanted them to be in the main sporting kit this was because we wanted all 3 products to tie in together. Ahmed was wearing his school basketball kit which was clearly shown by the logo ‘Lampton School Basketball’ and Yahya was in his professional basketball kit which symbolises how Ahmed successfully became a professional basketball player. When looking at both our magazine cover and poster there was a similar theme of red, blue and white. This was to symbolises the colours of the NBA and we wanted this continuity to remain throughout our trailer and 2 ancillary texts to show that the all linked. Fonts also played a significant role in both our 3 main products. As we decided that a basketball type of font would look best, such as the font used on a basketball jersey. We had used the font on our poster also in our trailer to reveal the title which also helped to keep continuity throughout our media products as our audience to help to easily identify the font from our trailer in our poster as we wanted it to anchor in their heads, as the colour of the font was in a dark orange colour to represent a basketball. However in our magazine cover we wanted a more formal text however with a sports element to show our magazine had a more serious side as it was to inform people about our movie and other films. On our movie cover we decided to include upcoming movies such as Jurassic World and the Batman v Superman this was because our film trailer was targeted at a young male audience and we thought including these Hollywood blockbusters would also appeal to a larger audience who may be a fan of the films. The release date for each of our products was summer 2015 this was because we wanted our products to be released during the time of the NBA play offs which would help create more of a buzz for our movie, we wanted our movie to be the movie of the summer as many teenagers and young adults tend to have summer holidays around this period hence we would gain more of an audience. Overall our main products all intertwined to show key elements from our trailer .
